Meet our CEO, Shaun Mahoney

As Chirpy Financial’s Managing Director and CEO, Shaun brings a wealth of experience in financial management, corporate strategy, customer-centric innovation, and organisational leadership. His track record of success—whether in stabilising banking institutions during economic crises, pioneering new business ventures, or creating impactful social initiatives—positions him as a transformative leader capable of navigating the complexities of the modern financial landscape.

Early beginnings in leadership

Shaun’s journey into leadership began at just 16 when he became the youngest charter yacht skipper in New Zealand, an early indication of his drive and ability to take on significant responsibilities.

His natural leadership skills and dedication to service soon led him to the United States, where in 1996, he became the first NZ youth worker to receive a U.S. green card—an achievement that underscored his impact in the sector.

Shaun’s work with young people continued to expand, culminating in his role in developing the largest youth centre in Las Vegas, providing a safe, innovative space for thousands of young people to learn, grow, and develop essential life skills.

A high achiever in banking & finance

In 2001, Shaun transitioned to the banking and finance sector, quickly proving himself as an exceptional talent. His aptitude for financial strategy and client engagement earned him recognition as a “rookie superstar” in Mortgage Originator magazine.

His expertise became particularly invaluable during the global financial crisis of 2008 when he was handpicked from thousands of professionals to join a team of eight elite investment bankers at MetLife Bank. In this role, Shaun played an instrumental part in developing and implementing policies that strengthened customer confidence and improved operational efficiency to help the bank navigate the complex circumstances at the time.

Under his leadership, MetLife Home Loans was ranked #2 for customer service in the U.S. by JD Power in 2010—an achievement that reflected Shaun’s ability to drive excellence even in times of economic uncertainty.

Leadership role at one of Australia’s leading financial institutions

In 2009, Shaun relocated to Australia, continuing his impact in the banking sector while also venturing into publishing. In 2010, he authored a successful business book that provided invaluable insights into financial management and business strategy.

His expertise was further recognised when, in 2011, he was selected to serve as the inaugural bank manager of Westpac’s new flagship branch in regional Queensland.

In this role, Shaun was responsible for shaping the branch’s strategic direction, optimising customer engagement, and driving financial growth in the region. His leadership style—centred on innovation, relationship-building, and operational excellence—quickly made a lasting impact.

Transition to technology and entrepreneurship

Following a workplace injury, Shaun channelled his entrepreneurial spirit into the technology sector, co-founding a pioneering startup with his mother – an innovator in her own right, the first woman CTO in NZ.

Together, they launched Australia’s first electronic direct mail (EDM) company to integrate with Mailchimp, revolutionising digital marketing solutions for businesses nationwide. This endeavour demonstrated Shaun’s versatility as a leader and his ability to identify and execute disruptive business solutions that cater to emerging market needs.

The Chirpy Plus community was born

In 2018, Shaun founded Chirpy Plus with his mother, a groundbreaking initiative designed to build a vibrant, supportive community for Australians over 50’s.

Under his leadership, Chirpy Plus rapidly grew into Australia’s leading community platform, offering a unique blend of digital engagement, social connectivity, and tailored resources. His visionary leadership and commitment to fostering inclusivity and innovation earned Chirpy multiple business accolades, including the prestigious Telstra Best of Business Award for Innovation in 2024.

Chirpy Financial

Chirpy Financial was established as an expansion of the Chirpy Group to give Chirpy members access to fixed income opportunities while enabling the Chirpy Group to expand its footprint locally in Australia and overseas.

Under Shaun’s leadership, Chirpy Financial is expanding its reach into affordable retirement housing, asset-backed lending and other investment opportunities aimed at expanding the group’s commercial interests.
